A Cherry In Winter

By Sherry Riter 4 Comments

I love the look of a Chinese Paper Lantern as well as the soft glow of light that it casts in a room.

There is an exotic flower that got its name from this unique and extravagant lantern. After the post On The Inside, Judy Harper said, “Beautiful post and beautiful flowers! Do you know the name of the flower that looks like a cherry enveloped in a netting heart? It is so delicate looking.”

The plant is the Chinese Lantern

According to Capital Gardens:

The Chinese Garden is a “Bright orange, papery, lantern-shaped calyces, several to each long stem. Much in demand for winter arrangements. Exotic-looking flowers. HP – Hardy perennial. Height 60cm (2′).

CULTURE: Sow February-March under glass or May-July in a cold frame or greenhouse. Flowers July-October the following year.

HINTS: Ideal for beds and borders, and for dried flowers. Prefers full sun.

Flowering/Fruiting Time: July-October”

You’ll be happy to know that it is also called ” Winter Cherry.”
