What Is My Name? We Have A Winner!

By Sherry Riter 18 Comments

I’m sorry I had to interrupt the heart gripping story of my friend Sophia when there are only two more postings, but remember the contest with $100 worth of prizes for the person who could guess my name? Well, it officially is over and we have a winner!

My name is…

neon Sherry

My mother was reading a book in the 9th grade. There was a French girl in the book with my name (spelled Chéri) and she decided that some day that would be the name of her child. Unfortunately, nurses who lived in the farming community back then had no idea how to spell a French name. My mother and father, both very young, didn’t notice that my name was “misspelled” on my birth certificate until they enrolled me in first grade! That still cracks me up! Even funnier is that it still makes my mom mad that they misspelled it!

Here is a little about my name…
animated Sherry
Sherry written in Korean1959 – Mattel introduces the Barbie doll; other nickname names like Lori, Cindy, Sherry and Terri are hot (woohoo).

1960s and 70s – peppy cheerleader name (that’s the closest I ever got to being anything like a cheerleader!)

2009– considered dowdy and old-fashioned. (that’s just lovely, huh?).

Origin – Alternatively, Sherry can be a reworking of the French chérie (darling, dear or cherished) and means (beloved) in Hebrew.

It takes at least four generations for names to sound appealing again for babies, so it will be a while before Sherry becomes “hip” again.

Congratulations Teresha!

Be honest everyone…had you heard all those Sherry songs? Needless to say, I have always loved Frankie Valli and he can STILL hit those notes!

Have a great day!

I've heard several of those songs. I have always liked the name Sherry.

That's funny how your folks didn't see that your name had been spelled wrong.

Until I was 16 and saw my birth cerificate for the first time I thought my middle name was spelled Jean. All those years and Mom didn't correct me once. My middle name was suppose to be a version of my Dad's middle name and was suppose to be spelled like his, 'Gene', but the hospital put it on the birth cert. application as 'Gean'.

    Crazy!

    Thank you all!

Mom, you are right about Dad. He sent me a letter the other day and spelled my name "Sherrie" on the outside and "Sherri" on the inside. I guess he is trying to hit all the bases!

Great name, but can I still call you "Red"? While Sherry is a beautiful name and I've heard all the songs as well, "Red" seems to fit too. Of course, I was so sure it is Reba. LOL

What a beautiful name Sherry! Now I finally know it! I remember many of those songs!
I see my name was sorta popular back in the 50s, until I changed Cindy to Cindi in 7th grade!

Thanks for visiting my blog today! And I loved your blog post on how you got your name and the spelling!

It has inspired a blog post for how I got my Sherry name as well, and I think you will like it, too!

I'll get back with you when I write it!

GREAT post! So much I didn't know about my own name! I stopped with the "Darling" French meaning, loved the Hebrew "beloved" meaning, and had NO idea my name was now so very un-hip!

Tashmica. I have never found it anywhere else. Good to know I will never have a moment when I think someone is calling my name. It will always be my turn for the appointment or to pick up my food. Ah the simple things 🙂
