Sniff, Sniff, Do Your Feet Stink?

Do your feet gargle, eat fish and chips or crave spices?

How to tell if your feet smell stinky...

Do your feet stink?

Doesn’t that just crack you up?

I don’t know if it was the nerdy shoes I wore or simply my hormonal feet, but as a teenager I had the stinkiest feet on the planet. No really, the STINKIEST FEET ON THE PLANET.

My feet were so stinky…

“How stinky were your feet?” you asked.

My feet were so stinky that:

  • If I took off my shoes, I had to immediately wash soak my feet in HOT water.
  • I could not keep my shoes in the house because the smell burned the hair from our nostrils with their stench.
  • Nothing could remove the atrocious odor in my shoes.
  • I hated to put my foot back into the shoe.
  • Anything that touched the smelly insides of my shoe would then have the same rank odor.
  • I was happy every time I got a new pair of shoes.

My feet, thankfully, are no longer stinky.

What causes smelly feet?

Foot odor happens when the apocrine glands (developed in hair follicles) secrete sweat into the tubule of the gland. This is then taken to the skin’s surface and is odorless. When the sweat hits the skin’s surface, it meets with bacteria as it is broken down and then chemicals and fat in the sweat cause odor.

When you put your foot into a shoe where the average temperature reaches 100 degrees it is going to produce sweat. There are a few things you can do to help reduce the occurrence of smelly feet:

  • Always wear thick cotton socks.
  • Thoroughly dry your feet after bathing.
  • Bath daily and wear clean, unused socks.
  • Rotate your shoes by wearing a different pair at least every third day to allow a full 24 hours for them to dry.
  • Air shoes outside or in the garage.
  • Let your shoes sit in the window sill so that the sun can shine into them.
  • Use antibacterial foot powder.
  • Use odor eating insoles to soak up and eliminate foot odor.

pickleHelpful products to eliminate stinky feet:

  • Alum in the Spice/Herb section of the grocery store – coat the inside your shoes with a thin layer before you wear them. Yeah, it is the same stuff you put in pickles to make them crunchy…LOL
  • Soak feet for fifteen minutes in an apple cider vinegar and water mix.
  • Use a deodorant soap to wash your stinky feet.
  • Soak feet in strong, dark tea (not herbal) for fifteen minutes. The tannins in the tea kill the bacteria that cause that horrible stink. Keep the tea bags in the solution.
  • Salt and vinegar soak for thirty minutes for your feet. Does that make you want to sing the song, “Fish and chips and vinegar, vinegar, vinegar…” Okay, maybe not.
  • Let your stinky feet bathe in Listerine. Apply to your feet with cotton balls being sure to completely cover all areas (between toes and under toes) and then let them dry completely before walking on them or putting them into your shoes. Does this mean your feet are gargling?

My 3 year old's feet STINK. He hates to wear socks, so I know that's the culprit.

I had to retrieve this from my mail:

Amethyst Moon has left a new comment on your post "Sniff, Sniff, Do Your Feet Stink?":

Interesting post! My daughter had the worst foot odor, a few years back so I completely understand, her cleats actually smelled like a litter box! Yuck! But, we tried the tea bag soaking and it worked miracles!
