The Redhead Riter

Witty, Intelligent & Addictive

Here Comes The Sun

By Sherry Riter 16 Comments

Have you ever known someone that has a positive attitude EVERY time you see them? Immediately there is a sense of well being, but sometime during or after time spent with the person, the thought creeps in…”How can they be so happy?”

I know someone who ALWAYS has a smile on his face like the bright sunshine.

“Those who bring sunshine
to the lives
of others
cannot keep it from themselves.”

~James Matthew Barrie~

Being an inquisitive person (to some an annoyance), one day I asked the “smiley” person if he was really that happy. He didn’t even have to stop and think before he gave a resounding positive response.

We talked for awhile and he told me all about his life which had been filled with many trials, but with each one, he expressed the lesson learned and how it had molded his life positively. I was not only surprised with the depth of experiences in his life, but also the constant theme of positiveness that was woven throughout like thread in a tapestry.

Although I am able to deliver positive messages, I must be honest and say that my first response during a trial is “Why me?” and I often panic totally forgetting all positive messages I have ever received or given.

As our friendship has grown and I have learned more about “Smiley’s” life and seen his attitude in practice, I must say I truly admire him. I want to mirror his attitude and always have a big smile and see the sunshine in every trial. Now when I see him, I hear the song, “Here Comes The Sun”.

Don’t feel that you are the only person that struggles with trying to keep a positive attitude, but you can conquer the negativity. I used to tell my employees to pretend to be happy when associating with customers. My motto was simple, “Fake it until you feel it.” The first thing you want a customer to see is a welcoming smile and they do not need to know what is going on behind the smile.

Our attitude is basically in our minds. Buddha got it right when he said, “We are what we think.” There are other skills we can practice to bring sunshine into our lives.

  1. Surround yourself with positive people. Negative people drag you down and positive people build you up while supporting your goals.
  2. Set goals and make achievable plans to attain them. Aimlessly roaming through life often leads to unhappiness.
  3. Smile even if you don’t feel it inside. It is amazing how smiling can actually help to uplift the spirit.
  4. Help other people with their problems or the attainment of goals.
  5. Control your mind and minimize the negativity you allow in it. Use the simple trick that every time you think something negative you have to write down two positives and put the note in a prominent place that you will have to see it all day.
  6. Be thankful for the things you have and don’t concentrate on the things you do not have in your life. Basically, count your blessings.
  7. Talk to yourself. I’m really good at this one. Tell yourself all day that, “I can do it”, “I am a valuable person”, “I am worth the effort”, or “I am happy”.

You are in control of your mind and your attitude. If there are negative people or experiences in your life that cause you unhappiness, move away from them. We all can only control one person…ourselves. Use positive affirmations each day to get that bright smile on your face and the happy song in your heart.

“Wherever you go,
no matter what the weather,
always bring your own sunshine.”

~Anthony J. D’Angelo~

I think that peace is more important in people than happiness—sometimes happiness can be fleeting, but peace is eternal….

One of my sons had a second grade teacher who always smiled, was always pumped up. I asked the principal if she truly was always like that (or would she explode eventually). She was a true gem – I adore her! She made my sons 2nd grade year a wow year, and mine, too! What an uplifting post to motivate us to be like those we admire the most!

#4 & #6 are what bring out the smile in me the most. It is a great feeling to help someone and when I think of all that God has blessed me with I can't help but smile.

    Good advice.

I've been really trying to be more positive. I have a tendency to notice and dwell on negatives. Like you said, I can (and will) change that!

I've been trying to be more positive & realizing that it's better to look toward happiness than the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" things.
