Eating Gross Food Can Be Enjoyable

By Sherry Riter 9 Comments

Eating Gross Food Can Be Enjoyable closeup

Sometimes you like the food that you try and sometimes you don’t, but hopefully you don’t have to eat food you don’t enjoy.

I was raised in the era where children were taught to clean their plates and eat the food that was placed before them whether they liked it or not. I liked just about every kind of food that I was exposed to including:

  • fried pig skins
  • frog legs
  • pickled pigs feet
  • fish
  • pork barbecue
  • turnip greens with hot vinegar
  • cabbage and potatoes
  • cornbread
  • cucumbers in vinegar
  • pecan pie
  • peach cobbler
  • strawberry refrigerator cake
  • chicken and dumplings
  • fried green tomatoes
  • hush puppies
  • banana sandwiches
  • Vienna sausages
  • potted meat

However, there was one food that I hated. Yes, I hated this food more than words can describe.

What was the food that I still find totally disgusting?

Well, I love fresh peaches, but I abhor peaches in a metal can.

Oh gag!

Something about the metal and juice react with the peaches to totally change their flavor and texture. I can’t even describe that peachy metal flavor and they feel like soft rubber. Ewww!

Eating Gross Food Can Be Enjoyable

My mother thought that it was mandatory for me to eat peaches sold in metal cans in order to grow up healthy and strong. (rolling my eyes) Plus, she loves those stinky, squishy, almost slimy, yucky tasting peaches.

Oh the grossness!

There are many people that love peaches in a can, but I’m not one of them. I don’t have to worry about gagging on the peaches anymore because you won’t find any in my home. If I go somewhere and someone offers me peaches from a metal can, I politely refuse.

I do not eat foods that do not taste delicious.

As gross as I think peaches in a can taste, there is a food in my home that I have to see and smell everyday that is much more gross! Actually, it is even considered a treat!

Dried river shrimp.

Eating Gross Food Can Be Enjoyable - Turtle food

No, I don’t eat them. Turtle eats them ravenously!

Everyday when I drop a few pellets of food in his tank, I also give Turtle a few dried shrimp. He eats them like he’s been starving for weeks. The dried shrimp look and smell atrociously gross.

No, not just gross…atrociously gross.

Thankfully I don’t have to eat the dried shrimp and Turtle finds them quite enjoyable. Actually I find it very enjoyable watching Turtle munch away on the smelly dried crustaceans. He is such a crazy weird reptile, but absolutely adorable.

So what have I learned about eating gross things that are either liked by many or will make me healthier?

If I don’t like it, I’m not eating it!

It’s just that simple! Ha! Ha!

ha! I found a food that You don’t like & I love! I used to buy packaged of dried shrimp in an oriental grocery… they reconstitute them in soups – but I used to love eating them like candy! they were a good deal smaller than those that you feed to Turtle, & they had their heads removed, so they were just like mini versions of the shrimps in shrimp cocktail… must say, though, that Turtle’s delicacies don’t look much different than clawless craw dads – & surely every southerner loves those mud bugs!!! 😀

If I could go back, knowing then what I know now, I would never make you eat anything you did not like. Oh yes, and you know how you always got back up when you heard a pretzel bag or a plate tink with the sound of a fork or spoon when your dad and I were trying to have a treat and nice time just the two of us? I would blister your behind and you would not get up!!! lol Do you remember how you stayed up until all hours with us? Your behind would be in bed at 9 and you would stay there!!! So maybe you do not want to go back and change things, hmmmmm. lol I could go on lol

I don’t like grits either, but I love hush puppies!!!! Since they are made of “corn” meal I won’t ever get to indulge in them again, but oh what sweet memories! Yum!
