Mom Thinks I Forgot

Because of many events that have occurred over the past two weeks and are now occurring, I have not been myself. I’ll tell you about that in a different post, but because of all that stuff, I know that Mom thinks I have forgotten something very important. Well, I didn’t forget.

I also have a reminder on the calendar in my phone that goes off to remind me each year that January 23rd is an important day.

On January 23, 1944, my mother was born which makes her 71 years old today.

Yes, that’s a picture of my mother as a baby with her parents. Such a precious photograph.

As you all know, my mother does NOT look her age as is evident in this untouched selfie she took and I swiped from her Facebook page.

See? Where are the 71 years of wrinkles? I sure don’t see them! Mom has miracle skin. Seriously.

As beautiful as Mom is to look at, she is equally beautiful on the inside because she loves with her whole heart. Is there anything better than having someone love you with their whole heart? I think not.

On this birthday post I wanted to write a poem, but I don’t feel very creative. So I searched for an old classic poem and found a very beautiful one written by Henry Van Dyke that I wanted to dedicate to my mother.

A Prayer for a Mother’s Birthday

Lord Jesus, Thou hast known
A mother’s love and tender care:
And Thou wilt hear, while for my own
Mother most dear I make this birthday prayer.

Protect her life, I pray,
Who gave the gift of life to me;
And may she know, from day to day,
The deepening glow of Life that comes from Thee.

As once upon her breast
Fearless and well content I lay,
So let her heart, on Thee at rest,
Feel fears depart and troubles fade away.

Her every wish fulfill;
And even if Thou must refuse
In anything, let Thy wise will
A comfort bring such as kind mothers use.

As once her hand held mine;
And though she may not understand
Life’s winding way, lead her in peace divine.

I cannot pay my debt
For all the love that she has given;

Now comes the sentimental stuff…

Mom, I’m so glad you were born and that you gave birth to me which then made it possible for me to give birth to Alyssa. When you look at it like that, life is such a miracle. I see so much of you in Alyssa, not only in her looks, but also in her likes, dislikes, talents, weaknesses and strengths. Funny how genetics work.

Anyway, I’m thankful to have you as my mother and in many ways, my sister and friend. As time has passed, the difference in our ages seems to continually dwindle. We are just two aging women who have many shared experiences and a whole lot of love between us.

I have so many wonderful memories of us together when I was a tiny child. You were so young. Oh my, you were so young. In my memories, looking back now, I realize how young you really were when you carried me around on your hip. You smiled all the time and your hair always tickled my nose. LOL

I love you very much Mom.

Like the poem by Henry Van Dyke said, I hope you will be blessed throughout the coming year with not only everything you need and want, but also with comfort and peace.
