Byte Me! Random And Pertinent Information About My Blog

By Sherry Riter 4 Comments

byte me

Do You Know About Bytes?

Right now, bytes are a really big deal to me and I’ll tell you why in a minute.

First you need to know the definition of byte before I can go further.

Definition of BYTE: The byte is a unit of digital information in computing and telecommunications that most commonly consists of eight bits.

Now I can ask you…Do you know about the byte measurement?

So going from larger to smaller, it looks something like this:

TB > GB > MB > KB > B

What do those abbreviations mean?

TB = terabyte
GB = gigabyte
MB = megabyte
KB = kilobyte
B = byte

What do these measurements look like in numbers?

1 bit = 1 or 0
1 nibble = 4 bits
1 byte = 8 bits or 2 nibbles
1KB = 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes
1MB = 1 megabyte = 1024 KB (kilobyte)
1GB = 1 gigabyte = 1024 MB (megabyte)
1 TB = 1 terabyte = 1024 GB (gigabyte)

A nibble? Hmmmm…If I think about nibbles it is either nibbles of food or nibbles of a handsome neck! This kilobyte stuff is, um, boring!

Do You Know That There Are A Lot Of Countries?

So bytes have a lot to do with countries in a round about way. To my amazement, there are more countries than I ever hear about and some are listed below:

Exceeded Bandwidth

I’m going to try to explain this simply.

Definition of BANDWIDTH:

1. the range of frequencies within a given band, in particular that used for transmitting a signal.
2. the energy or mental capacity required to deal with a situation.

Wait a minute. How does that make any sense when I see the message on a blog that I visit and all I see splashed across the page is “EXCEEDED BANDWIDTH” with no sign of the blog?

Let me explain what it means to EXCEED BANDWIDTH and how bandwidth applies in web hosting.

The term “bandwidth” is used synonymously with DATA TRANSFER RATE which is the amount of data transferred to or from the website or server within a particular period of time and measured in bytes.

Let me give you an example. We are going to pretend that a blog has a monthly bandwidth or monthly data transfer limit with their host of 500 GB. So their pictures and writing take up a percent of the space and the rest is basically used up as the site is visited. More visitors means more bytes used. If the blog author appears on The Ellen Degeneres show, more than likely the site will be visited or “hit” many, many times. It might be hit so much that 500 GB won’t be enough to accommodate all the visitors. Instead of seeing the blog, the visitors will see a message that states the blog has exceeded bandwidth.

What Does Any Of This Blog Post Have To Do With You?

If you visited my blog yesterday, you probably got the exceeded bandwidth message. I was rather shocked to see the message when I logged into my site. After reviewing the stats for the first time in a VERY long time, I discovered that I have a whole bunch more hits and readers than I realized. As a matter of fact, it has increased significantly over the past four months. Because of the huge jump in readership, it appears that I may have to start using a dedicated server at my hosting company instead of sharing one with other blogs.

So first, I want to thank you ALL for reading my blog. People from every one of those countries listed above read my blog, so thank you, thank you, thank you!

Next, I want to apologize for going down and being oblivious that I actually went down since I was napping and watching television.

Last, but not least, I want to make you aware that if my blog does funny stuff every now and then within the next month or so it is because I am getting the bandwidth straight.

Now you know why I had to explain bytes to you!

Water

Did you know that 1 cubic yard of water weighs 1728 pounds?

What does that bit of information have to do with this post about my blog’s bandwidth?

Nothing.

It has absolutely nothing to do with this post.

I just heard it on a documentary today and thought that it was really interesting!!!

Yes, that was totally random and nerdy, but you already know that I’m a nerd so I’m sure I haven’t shocked you at all. Instead, you might be shaking your head while thinking, “That redhead is a nut…in a good way.”

(wink)
