Mom takes selfies.
That may not seem like a big deal to the computer-wise, but my mother did not grow up with a computer and is not a “paperwork” person. So when Mom learned to text and email, it was a BIG deal.
Actually, it is still a big deal.
I’m sure some of your mothers are the same way. You get blank text messages, triplicate emails and cell phone camera selfies that only show the top of her head. Well, I appreciate all contact because at the moment I receive anything from my mother, I know that she is thinking of me. Not just thinking of me, but once again extending her love to me in a more modern form.
This week Mom had a procedure done at the hospital. After it was over and her hair had been put in a hospital cap, they wheeled her into recovery. Mom in recovery is always a fun experience. She is all laughs, giggles and says the most hilarious things.
Anyway, to comfort everyone and let them know that she was doing great, I took three pictures of Mom. Of course, she didn’t know I was snapping pictures, so there was no fake poses or smiles. Instead, I have pictures of a woman coming out of sedation. Guess what. Mom looks EXACTLY like she just left church!
I know you think I’m exaggerating, but she wasn’t pale, her hair was perfect and her makeup looked untouched. Mom looked absolutely beautiful.
You would think that by now it wouldn’t be a surprise to me that my mother looks so much younger than her seventy years or that even when she’s sedated, her beauty still shines through the grogginess, but I always marvel at her constant beauty.
Mom is not just beautiful on the outside, she’s also beautiful on the inside. No, she isn’t perfect, but Mom tries hard to always do her best.
As I have gotten older, I experienced becoming more my mother’s equal as an adult and woman on this planet. I don’t see her as someone who can kiss my scraped knee and make the pain go away, but instead Mom is someone who will pray for my health and happiness faster and longer than anyone else. If given the choice, Mom would willingly choose to suffer instead of me trudging through heartbreaks and sadness.
How do I know this to be true?
Mom loves me.
My mother may not like or approve of everything I do or have done, but she loves me and that I know for sure.
One of the greatest things Mom taught me was how to love another person. I love with my whole heart and everything I have and am. There is no halfway love or kinda love or a little bit of love. I either love you or I don’t and it isn’t hard for me to love you. I’m able to look past a person’s weaknesses and inadequacies to love the good in them. That’s how Mom loves me. That’s also how I love Alyssa, the sweet young woman who made me a mother.
On Mother’s Day we celebrate and honor mothers. I also always feel like celebrating and honoring the person that calls me Mom.
Do the three of us see eye-to-eye on everything? No.
Do the three of us love each other beyond words and without exception? Yes.
On this special day, I’m grateful for both of these women who have beautiful spirits and are lovely in appearance.
Thank you for being you.
Thank you for loving me with all that you are and the best that you can.
Thank you for believing that I am worth the effort and time to share life experiences with and to love.
Mom, thank you for giving birth to me and Alyssa, thank you for letting me give birth to you.
I love you both very much.
Mom, on this special day…
To My Mother
For all the times you gently picked me up, When I fell down, For all the times you tied my shoes And tucked me into bed, Or needed something But put me first instead. For everything we shared, The dreams, the laughter, And the tears, I love you with a “Special Love” That deepens every year. ~ Author Unknown ~
One other thing, Mom. I’m proud that you continue to learn and try new things. I know that technology sometimes stumps you, but that doesn’t ever stop you from giving it your best attempt. So, you can send me selfies anytime. I love them all.
Oh, I’ve also saved them all. I also still have the hospital recovery photos too. Should I post them so everyone can see that you are beautiful ALL the time? (wink)
Happy Mother’s Day!

I think Mother’s Day has become a highly commercialized day for department stores and florist shops.
I don’t need a gift from my son or flowers on Mother’s Day to know that he loves me and thinks of me. He shows it to me in so many ways all through the year. I have told my son, “Don’t buy me a Mother’s Day card. It’s somebody elses words and thoughts. If you want to express your feelings to me then make your own card and write your own words. That would be so much more meaningful to me.” And do you want to know something? It is these handwritten letters and cards that my son has made for me over the years that I treasure, because I know it came from his heart. 🙂

I totally understand what you’re saying, Joan. I think department stores have taken all our holidays and just run with them.
It is nice that your son appreciates you throughout the year and shows it. He will make a great husband some day to a very lucky woman! 😉

I just read this because I just got my internet back. Oh thank you so much for this lovely post. What a home made card it is, and so grand. Thanks for not posting my hospital pics. I would hate to have to put a knot on your head after all these nice things you have said!!!! It was not hard to be a mom…I had you. I love you Sherry with all my heart.
