Irish Eyes And A Bit Of Irish

By Sherry Riter 6 Comments

When Irish Eyes

“When Irish eyes are smiling,
‘Tis like a morn in spring.
With a lilt of Irish laughter
You can hear the angels sing
When Irish hearts are happy
All the world is bright and gay
When Irish eyes are smiling
Sure, they steal your heart away.”
~ an old Irish Blessing ~

On St. Patrick’s Day it is customary to celebrate the holiday with shamrocks, leprechauns and wearing green. Even if I forget to wear green, I always claim to be exempt from the pinching tradition because I have green eyes. The holiday is an Irish holiday, so I thought I would tell you a few characteristics that are common for people who are Irish.

Irish Characteristics

Not all Irish people have all these traits, but looking back through the history of the people, there is a common thread of characteristics that bring them together:

  • red hair
  • pale, fair skin
  • freckles
  • blue or green eyes
  • kind
  • helpful
  • habit of being late
  • bad temper
  • stubborn
  • good company
  • friendly
  • like having fun
  • talkative
  • impulsive
  • inquisitive about people and places
  • philosophical about life
  • good sense of humor
  • hate saying “no,” so they are indirect with criticism and rejection
  • lucky

Lucky?

Oh yes, that saying is, “The luck of the Irish” which means “extreme good fortune.”

That’s what I wish for all of us going forward…extreme good fortune.

“May you have the hindsight
to know where you’ve been,
the foresight
to know where you’re going
and the insight
to know when you’re going too far.”

Someone tried to pinch me because I wasn’t wearing green. “I don’t have to wear green. My eyes are green,” I told them. They almost didn’t believe that green eyes counted.

    I still wish I had a red-headed child:(

Happy St Patrick’s Day – May the luck of the Irish be with you!

Hope you are doing well, Red!!! Trying to keep my head above water in blue cotton land!
