A Fresh Start In A New Year

homemade chocolate truffles oreo cherry cookie dough

Yum. Homemade chocolates. Does it get any better? These lovely Chocolate Oreo Truffles and Chocolate Cookie Dough Truffles were made by mother and given to Alyssa at Christmas.

For many, many, many years, Alyssa, Brittany and I celebrated the new year by toasting with chocolate covered cherries on New Year’s Eve. Since I don’t drink and the girls were children, we had to toast with something and chocolate covered cherries were always the staple at Christmas. Thus, our tradition was born.

The tradition, however, eventually had to end because Alyssa (19 years old) and Brittany (25 years old) grew up. (How dare they! LOL) So instead of toasting with Alyssa this year, shortly before midnight I opened her chocolate truffles and took a picture of them. Bella thought I was going to give her some, but she was very mistaken. I just stared at them with fond memories of Alyssa and Brittany excitedly watching the ball drop in Times Square while we all toasted cherries. Ahhh, such gloriously sweet memories.

New Years Eve 2012

“The only way to spend New Year’s Eve is either quietly with friends or in a brothel. Otherwise when the evening ends and people pair off, someone is bound to be left in tears.”
~ W.H. Auden ~

Well, I can promise you that I did not spend New Year’s Eve in a brothel, but I did spend it with friends. One swam around a tank (Turtle) and the other furry one barked every now and then, took short naps in my lap and watched me play Mahjong. Obviously, I spent the evening among critter friends and not human ones.

Although I didn’t eat Alyssa’s chocolate truffles, I did have a very large bowl of natural grain free ice cream with tons of homemade whipped cream on top. By the way, do you know the huge advantage of being among critter friends instead of human friends while eating a bowl of ice cream? I’ll tell you. After I finished eating the ice cream, I can lick the bowl without the critter friends thinking I’m weird or that I have no class. Did I lick the bowl? I’ll give you a hint. Do I ever lick bowls, spoons or beaters while I’m cooking?

January 1, 2013 Is The Beginning

“Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past.”
~ Henry Ward Beecher ~

Start with a fresh page. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? I know it isn’t quite that simple, however, in a very real way every day is a new page. A blank page as white as snow and unmarred by any actions. It is a new opportunity filled with possibilities. The thing that makes the fresh page unique is us. We determine what we will spend our time doing and how we will react every minute of every day. The first day of the new year is scientifically really no different than the last day of the previous year. The thing that can and does make New Year’s Day different is our hopeful attitude for a better future.

Well, I have one more day of my lovely extended vacation and then I will be back to work. This vacation has been very therapeutic. I was able to withdraw, feel yucky, sleep and start to feel better. Amazing how the mind and body can improve with some self-care and self-love. I hope that we all will remember to pamper ourselves more this year and I am definitely going to make it a high priority for myself. There are so many ways we can relax and rejuvenate. Maybe we will have to bathe together again. 😉

Happy New Year my friend. I spent the New Year hour trying to decide whether to turn off the car alarm due to the fireworks going off in the neighborhood :). I think they all tried to make a statement this year.

I wish you health, happiness and prosperity always! Now, since you mentioned ice cream, I am going to have a bowl of banana pudding ice cream..:).

    Happy New Year, Sherry!

Like you, I spend my New Year’s Eve with critter friends… sadly, no chocolate, but I did munch on left-over goodies… mmmmmmmmmmm…

I love the quotes you used – Auden’s is delightful, although I’m not able to confirm its veracity 😉 …as for Beecher’s, and à propos of nothing, my favorite quote from Beecher is this:

“If men had wings and bore black feathers, few of them would be clever enough to be crows.”

    …again, have a happy New Year – & hopefully a rejuvenating bath!!! 😀

LOL Funny quote by Auden!! I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

I took a lovely bath and pampered my curls. Now they look very bouncy flouncy and reminiscent of Medusa’s curls minus the snake properties! 😀

I hope you have a very happy new year with much laughter and love!

    Wishing you a Happy 2013.

Weird isn’t it when one prefers to be tucked in bed with a good book on NYE rather than fight the crowds to watch 5 minutes of fireworks..
