Left Brain : Right Brain : What Is Your Brain?

By Sherry Riter 13 Comments

The mind is a powerful thing and I love the science behind left brain-right brain characteristics. But I don’t want to go deep into the science because Mom sent me this great email today that is just too fun. Of course, sharing is one of my better qualities. (smile)

First, look at this picture to determine if you see the lady turning clockwise or counter clockwise.

girl turning

If you see this lady turning clockwise, you are supposed to be using your right brain.

If you see it turning the other way, (the lady turning counter-clockwise) you are supposed to be using your left brain.

Some people can make the lady turn both ways, but most people see it turning just one way. Only about 15% of the United States population can see her or make her move both ways.

What does it mean to be left brain or right brain?

Research has shown that people who are dominated by the right side of the brain are:

  • artistic
  • creative
  • emotional
  • extremely imaginative
  • animated talkers that use their hands
  • do not like to follow rules that seem unimportant to them
  • spontaneous
  • able to dream in color
  • sensitive to smells and knows your perfume with just a whiff
  • often perceived as lacking values or wishy washy/on the fence

People who are dominated by the left brain are:

  • logical
  • analyze the facts
  • blunt
  • evaluate to determine problem
  • plan and constant goal setters
  • perfectionist
  • high expectations of self
  • make well thought out decisions
  • slow to react
  • detail-oriented
  • able to easily focus on tasks

After looking at the lady in the picture and watching her turn both ways, I was totally mesmerized! As I stare at her, she appears to turn one way and then the other almost like dancing or ballet. It is just too cool!

So I found a test and after taking it, my score stated that I am 39.6 % right brain and 60.4% left brain. I’m fascinated with my own brain!

Let’s measure your left brain and right brain too. Take the test and then come back with your score and tell us!

You still remember the difference between a man and woman’s brain too, don’t you? hee hee hee

this is so weird, when I saw the girl spinning it was counter clockwise…and i thought no way I have always thought I was right brained! Artistic, talk with my hands, emotional, left-handed…but she was totally turning counter clockwise for me. Then I took the other test and this is what I got:
    Brain Lateralization Test Results

    Right Brain 38%
    Left Brain 62%

so both tests say left brained…weird!
this was fun thought, thanks!!! 🙂

Hey Gal! I took that test. Get this it says i am 47.6 Right Brained and 52.4 left brained. On the personality part I only had 3 right brain characteristics but NO left brain chaacteristics! LOL! I am one of the most disorganized people I know, The only thing I can call artistic is that I play the piano by ear. No imagination. NOT practical, not logical. I don't think this test pegged me. What can I say, I'm an enigma! LOL!
    God Bless!

I could make her rotate both ways. It was simply a matter of staring at her long enough (which wasn't a chore: she's pirtty!)

All this talk of left-brain and right-brain reminds me of a video I recently saw, of brain-scientist Jill Bolte Taylor's story of her stroke. She had an embolism IIRC in her left brain; and while she was experiencing its symptoms, parts of her left-brain consciousness faded in and out. Fascinating story.

She's twirling up a storm in both directions. 🙂

I did the test and it says:
    Right brain – 45.2%
    Left brain – 54.8%

It isn't really a surprise to me that left brain is a little more in control than right brain is. I can't cope without logic and that is one of the things wrecking me emotionally right now is a lack of logic in something that happened in my family.

But, overall I am both analytical and artistic.

All of the things in your right brain list apply to me except that I do not generally talk with my hands and I don't think that I'm perceived as lacking values. I'm pretty adamant about what I believe in.

I thought that everybody dreamed in color? haha

In your left brain listing, I plan lots but am not so good at goal setting. It would appear that not all of my decisions have been well thought out. I am both fast & slow to react, it just depends on what exactly I am reacting to.

The focus part is where I depart that list. haha I can't focus worth diddly, literally or figuratively right now. If I could, I would be doing my training rather than blog-responding. haha

This was a great and fun post, Red. 🙂

I saw it turn both ways, too! At first, it was turning clockwise, then I looked at something else for a second and out of the corner of my eye, it appeared to skip or something and then, suddenly, it was turning counter-clockwise!

I identify most with the characteristics on the first list, but definitely relate to some on the 2nd, as well.

    Off to take the test!

    Right brain 58.8%
    Left brain 41.2%

Interesting! I thought it might be towards the middle.

I wasn't suprised one but i seem to go back and fourth a bit. I crave orderliness but have a tendency to get a bit messy first.

It's easy to switch, if you know how. Simply close your dominant eye, which for me, is the left, as I originally see the girl pirouetting right….

Getting both sides of the brain to complement each other at the correct times is the key to success.

And can you make the girl stop spinning?
