Everyone breathes, but there are different ways to breathe and everyone breathes differently. Normal or regular breathing is about even 12 to 20 breaths per minute for the average person. So let me tell you about 13 types of breathing…
Scared or Frightened Breathing
You hear a noise in the house and know that you have to go investigate it. Since you are all alone and unsure what caused the noise, your pulse quickens and so does your breathing because you are frightened. The scared breath is not really fun to experience.
Dying Breaths
I listened to my dad’s dying breaths and the memory of them still hurts me. *sigh* He may have suffered a short time, but that he had to suffer at all is sad. Enough said about dying breaths.
Exercise Breathing
Huffing and puffing to get air because as you exert yourself, is exercise breathing. There is a need for more oxygen because your body is using more while you exercise. When a body is out of shape, breaths are usually more laborious and taken more often too. I don’t like exercising. Well, I don’t like doing traditional exercises like jumping jacks and leg lunges. I do like activity exercises like basketball, mowing the lawn and other stuff.
Prank Callers Breathe
Yeah, people who make prank calls like to breathe in your ear on the telephone. This kind of breathing is aggravating and sometimes very frightening. The prank caller uses breathing to purposefully scare the victim.
Hoo Hoo Hoo Hee
Giving birth to a baby is no easy task. Actually, it is hard work! One thing the mother can do to help with the pain and delivery is to control her breathing during the contractions. This type of breathing helps to focus the attention away from pain and it relaxes the body. Relaxing is crucial to control the pain. Usually breathing through a contraction is something like this: hoo, hoo, hoo, hee. Crazy, huh?
Snarfing Breaths
An inelegant way to breathe is breathing hard while snarfing up a meal in a hurry. If the breathing gets out of hand, you can end up choking on the food. Of course I don’t have experience in snarfing breathing! (I wonder if they will know I’m lying.)
Freezing Cold Breathing
After it snowed a REALLY BIG snow in 2010, the wind was blowing like crazy, but we still wanted a picture in the snow. Well, needless to say, it was cold, cold, cold as the wind seemed to whip through our clothes. There was a whole lot of brisk intakes of air and heavy breaths while trying to stay warm. The cold wind also took my breath away a couple times. Shivering cold breathing isn’t fun either.
Sweating Like A Dog Breathing
Since I don’t really sweat often, I have a tendency to get overheated. During those times, my breathing is just like a dog when he is sweating. You know the analogy, right? Tongue hanging out and heavy panting like a dog. I’m sure you have a great visual of me now. LOL
Surprised Breathing
That quick intake of air when you’re surprised is yet another type of breathing. If the surprise is good, the happy surprised breathing actually sounds very different than the shocked breathing. I don’t really like surprises. I guess that is why I try to secretly open my presents before a holiday. Yeah, I’m bad.
Aggravated Breath
We’ve all been on both the receiving and giving end of the aggravated breath. That sharp intake of air is undeniable. Yuck! Let’s not think about this one!
Rushing Around The House Breathing
When I’m in a hurry, I run in the house. It goes against the childhood rule that everyone preached which was, “Don’t run in the house!” So I find it quite liberating to run in the house now that I’m an adult. Maybe I do have a bit of rebellion in me after all.
Happy Or Nervous Laughing Breathing
Actually, I laugh when I’m nervous. I hate it! As I’m nervously laughing, I get aggravated at myself for being nervous. All that training to obtain “tools” to use in order to prevent the nervousness go right out the door.
Sexual Breathing
Ahhhh yes. I couldn’t disappoint you by leaving sex off my list since it seems to make every list I create. Sexual breathing is as erotic as passionate kissing. Listening to your lover breathe is not only a turn on, but it is also reassuring. We all want to know that we are desired physically the same way we are desiring the other person. As much as I love this type of breathing and I really do love sexual breathing, it isn’t the first one on my list.
You Are Asleep Breathing
I have actually saved the best for last. When someone I care for is asleep, I find their breathing to be comforting and peaceful. It also causes love to well up inside my heart. I have watched my daughter’s peaceful face while she slept and listened to her soft breathing so many times. I think the breathing of my sleeping daughter is beautiful just like her beautiful face.
Maybe I’m odd when it comes to the breathing thing, but having come so close to suffocating, I appreciate every breath I take more than ever. Breathing is as basic as a heartbeat. It represents life and connection to me. I like to hear you breathe.

How about COPD breathing with SInus problems? LOL! That is when I have raspy breaths because of my COPD, yet since I have bad sinus problems I can blow and blow my nose but it still stays stopped up. It is definitely not a sexy sound! LOL!
