I’m sitting here writing this post in my pajamas with candles flickering around the room and singing songs like…
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eye lashes
Silver white winters that melt into spring
These are a few of my favorite things! When the dog bites, when the bee stings
When I’m feeling sad,
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad!
Yep, I sound just like Julie Andrews did in the Sound Of Music. (rolling my eyes) I’m such a hip, stylish redhead!
Actually, I just finished giving my long red tresses special attention with my DIY (Do It Yourself) deep moisturizing hair conditioner. Not only does it smell good, work great, cost less than the hair salon, but it only has two ingredients that I’m not allergic to at all. This conditioner is dairy free, grain free, gluten free, paleo and vegan!
Let me show you what I did…
How To Make Deep Moisturizing Hair Conditioner
The first thing you need to do to start the process of making your own hypoallergenic deep moisturizing hair conditioner is to gather everything you’re going to need together in one place.
Yes, you need the candle. Actually, light candles all around the room because this is going to be a very relaxing experience.
The first ingredient you need is Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Put a couple tablespoons in a small container.
The second ingredient needed to create the moisturizing hair conditioner is Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.
When you open the container of Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil it will be very thick. Actually, it is a soft solid. I know that is a contradiction of terms, but it is the best way to describe the consistency.
I stirred it and at the touch of my fingers it melted. Coconut oil is so rich and moisturizing. I love it!
You don’t actually need the crocheted headband made by my mother (she can make anything), but it sure did help keep everything from dripping in my eyes and helped me not feel so unattractive.
Oh yes! Now Travis Tritt is singing…
And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the suns still shinin’ when I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good?
Sorry. I get carried away with that song because he howls.
Anyway, let’s get back to the DIY grain free hypoallergenic deep moisturizing hair conditioner.
I added two tablespoons of the Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil to the glass that held an equal amount of Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Then I stirred the two miracle ingredients together.
Now go wash your hair, towel dry it well and comb all the knots out. Dip your finger tips into the olive oil – coconut oil mixture and smear it on your hair starting at the roots. After putting the mixture on half your hair, comb through it and then put the oil on the other half of your hair in the same way. If you have oil left after all your hair has been covered with the Deep Moisturizing Hair Conditioner, you can add more of the oil mixture to your hair and comb through it again until you feel that every strand is doubly coated.
Next is the funny part.
I pulled three sheets of plastic wrap off the roll and overlapped the long edge of pieces 1 and 2. Then I overlapped the long edge of pieces 2 and 3 together. That gave me a very large square of plastic wrap that I put across the vanity sink area. Then I flipped my hair over and put the plastic wrap over my hair just like I would a towel. I even gathered the excess plastic wrap and bunched it on top of my head to seal it well.
Yes, that’s my black pajamas with pink flowers. You know I live in pajamas!
With all the moisture trapped under the plastic wrap, I used a large clip to hold the end that I flipped over on the top of my head. I wanted to ensure that it wasn’t going to come undone.
Next, since my daughter, Alyssa was on a date, I got the crocheted headband my mother made for her from her bathroom and slipped it over my head. It fit perfectly around the edge of the made-it-myself plastic cap.
My head kind of reminded me of how they shrink wrap baskets. No one saw me except for Bella and Turtle anyway. The important thing is that no drippies got past the headband during the three hours my hair was wrapped in the plastic. 😀 I need to tell my mother that I want a headband too. 😉
How did my natural curly red hair turn out after I washed and dried it? Oooooh la la! My hair is a mass of flowing soft red curls. Thank you God for natural curly red hair that I can blow dry in five minutes!
It was hard taking a picture of the back of my head because I was too lazy to pull out the tripod. LOL
By the way, not only can you use the Deep Moisturizing Hair Conditioner on your hair, but it works great to soften feet and hands. Bald men can put it on their heads to keep it moisturized. See! I always think of my bald friends too!
I’ve got to go sing Moonlight Feels Right now with the group Starbuck. I just love that song especially since they know a little bit about us Southern women.
Moonlight feels right, moonlight feels right.
We’ll lay back and observe the constellations
and watch the moon smiling bright
I’ll play the radio on southern stations
’cause southern belles are hell at night. 😉
Skip_D says
oooh la la indeed! your curls look – hyper curly! 🙂 congrats on finding a non-allergenic moisturizer! btw, in Eritrea & Ethiopia, & probably in other parts of Africa & the middle east as well, women anoint their hair with clarified butter, which would probably also be non-allergenic…
Sherry Riter says
Butter? Wow! I love the way my hair smells lightly of coconut when it swishes around my face. 😀
julie says
Me Likey. Am going to do this today.. I am way ahead of you though, I did the whole of The Sound Of Music last night, then Oklahoma! moving on this morning to The King and I (“I whistle a happy tune”)
XX Lovely!
Sherry Riter says
Thanks Julie! Well, it is nice to know someone else enjoys all the oldie goldies and belts them out at random times of the day! High Five!!!
Joan says
OMG, have I ever told you that you are the GREATEST FIND ON THE INTERNET? Well, if I haven’t, I’m telling you now! You are Lucille Ball reincarnated! Come to think of it you are both zany redheads! I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed reading this post. It was funny, entertaining, amusing and informative! I howled out loud at the part when you showed us the picture of yourself with your hair in the plastic wrap and wrote on the picture, “No makeup, so my freckles show. No, I’m not showing you more of my face without makeup. Are you crazy?” LOL, LOL, LOL
I pray Ryan Seacrest is reading your blog. He should make a reality television show out of your life and writings on the Internet called “The Redhead Riter.” (I can’t come up with a better title for a reality television show about your life and writings than the title of your own blog.) With all the zany posts that you come up with, who better than you to do a reality television show on? It would be laugh out loud funny as well as entertaining.
In case you were unaware, Ryan Seacrest wears many hats. Among one of the many hats that he wears is that of television producer. He produces the reality television show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” I think “The Redhead Riter” would make a great reality television show. Ryan are you listening?
And if Ryan Seacrest isn’t listening are there any reality television producers out there who are reading The Redhead Riter’s blog? If so there’s a great opportunity here for a smash reality television show. The Redhead Riter is the “I Love Lucy” reality television show for the 21st Century! 🙂
Joan says
Hey, Redhead Riter, if you get this gig maybe I can be your agent! 🙂
Joan says
I’m writing a letter to Ryan Seacrest’s production company right now! 🙂
Joan says
If you hear from Ryan let me know! 🙂
Joan says
It’s good to have friends in high places – and even though I am not in a high place yet – I do live in Hollywood! 🙂
Sherry Riter says
Good! LOL
Sherry Riter says
Sure Joan, but not my accountant because we have already established that you can’t count. LOL
Sherry Riter says
LOL You are so funny! 😀 I can’t even imagine a show called, “The Redhead Riter.” Would anyone want to really watch all my nerdiness? LOL If Ryan Seacrest is reading, “Hi Ryan!” I think he is so cute. Don’t you Joan?
Bev says
Sherry, Joan is right. The writing on the homemade plastic cap was so very funny. I think Joan should be in the reality show with you :). And yes, your hair is beautiful! Thanks for the recipe, I think I will share it with my granddaughter.
Sherry Riter says
Thank you Bev!!! I would love to be in a show with Joan! She keeps me in stitches! 😀
Joan says
If you do get a reality television show would you move out to Hollywood with Alyssa, Bella and Turtle? 🙂
Joan says
Or would you do the reality television show in Richmond, Virginia where you already live?
Joan says
Ohhh, knowing you, not even a reality television show would get you to move out to Hollywood! 🙁
Joan says
Ohhh, on second thought let’s forget Hollywood and move out to Malibu! 🙂 🙂 🙂
My brother could design houses for us right next to each other in the Malibu mountains! We’d live high up in the Malibu mountains and we could look down at the Pacific Ocean. What a view we would have.
Joan says
Besides, Malibu is where it is at, not Hollywood! Did you know that Barbra Streisand lives in Hollywood? Talk about networking, imagine how cool it would be to live right next door to Barbra Streisand – well, not exactly next door to her, but maybe on the same mountain! 🙂
WOW. I could bring my screenplay over to her and say, “Babs, I got a great screenplay for you! It’s guaranteed to bring you an Oscar for Best Actress!”
Ohhh, just imagine how much fun we could have, Redhead Riter, if we both lived in Malibu and Barbra Streisand was our neighbor! 🙂
Joan says
Are you imagining this with me, Redhead Riter or am I imagining it alone? Is this my dream and not yours?
Joan says
How could you not want to live in Malibu with a home designed by my brother? You know my brother is a world famous architect, (although he is not as famous as Barbra Streisand.) Still, people from all over the world have him design homes for them. He’s a genius if I say so myself! 🙂
Joan says
Oh heck, I might as well give my genius architect brother a plug and give out his website, so people won’t think I am making this up. Here’s my brother’s website http://www.oshatz.com.
My brother’s name is Robert Harvey Oshatz and he really is an architect and we both have the same last name because he really is my brother. And I could not be prouder of him because he is an incredible architect! 🙂
Joan says
You know, Redhead Riter, you should do a post about my brother’s architecture! (Just hinting.) 🙂
Joan says
Okay, so as you can see, Redhead Riter, I am working very hard at being your #1 commenter! How am I doing? How many comments do I have now and am I getting any closer in comments to you-know-who? You will let me know when I bypass you-know-who as your #1 commenter. I mean, how long can I go on commenting like this? I do have a life outside of commenting on your posts! 🙂

First of all, I thank you for your devotion to me. Second of all, the hair band was designed to be decoration not adsorbed gook. lol I will make you one and since you are such a funny, I will have to put humor on it.
Now for Joan…No, she is not moving!!!!!! No, she is not going on TV to be on one of those yucky reality shows. I do not like any of the reality shows!!! The people make fools out of themselves. I am married to a fool that watches them – Moonshiners, Swamp Men, Ax Men! lol Thank the good Lord he does not watch the Kardashians!!!! So forget trying to get my daughter out to crazy Hollywood!!!
Sherry, your hair is beautiful, but you always are beautiful to me. What color do you want your head band? Red? lol
Sherry Riter says
Whether it was supposed to absorb drippies or not, it worked great!
Ewwww, he watches all those shows? LOL You poor baby! LOL However, I would not act crazy on a reality show! Well, no crazier than I act now. LOL
Thank you. I like the cream one that you just made – the one you sent a picture of to me. 😀

Sherry Riter says
My hair feels so good! It is much easier styling it when the hair is moisturized well. Have fun doing it and don’t forget to light the candles!!!

Sherry Riter says
Thank you Nicole! One of my friends said she laughed her head off the whole time she was reading it! I said, “Good!!!” LOL
LuAnn Braley says
New follower from Friendship Friday Blog Hop at Create With Joy blog. Red was the color I would get out of those bottles when I made that kind of effort. It always drew attention! :O) Of course, some of it was “redder” than others. *LOL* Love the DIY recipe!
Sherry Riter says
Welcome LuAnn! Glad you hopped over!
Very funny about the “red” and I’m glad you like the recipe. Super easy and does the job well. 🙂
enchantedseashells says
I am so happy to have this tutorial! I have curly hair– brownish. Your curls are lovely! I will make some up tomorrow. Did you shampoo after or just rinse out? Thanks.
Sherry Riter says
Since I was going to bed afterwards, I just rinsed it good and then in the morning I washed the rest of it out. Just give your hair a treatment once a week to help keep it moisturized and the curls will be much more obedient! LOL
Neva says
I love red hair. I am straight and black and i hate it. 🙁 Your curls look great. Best wishes.
Sherry Riter says
Thank you so much!!! My mother has always thought that straight black hair is the most beautiful. Love your hair! I bet it is gorgeous!
Marlene Affeld Google+ says
Thanks for nice blog , just i want to know Did you shampoo after or just rinse out?
Sherry Riter says
Yes, I did shampoo because it is so moisturizing. 😀
andrea says
I love the simpleness of your commentary.the pics are so clear & helpful…the way you explain in easy terms adds to a great post…i’ll definitely try this one…thank you.
Sherry Riter says
Thank you Andrea. I’m glad you found it helpful and hope you enjoy many lovely moisturizing hair days! 😀
Billy says
I asked about how to cure dry skin and came across this post and after reading it for a while I just wanted to say you are the awesomeness person that ever put their insight on paper.
Sherry Riter says
Thank you so much! 🙂
Elizabeth R says
Wow! I can’t wait to try this! It has so many amazing ingredients. I usually only use Coconut oil by itself on my hair, so this will be fun!
Sherry Riter says
It is LOVELY! Enjoy!
Sara says
So do you wash your hair again after leaving the mixture in?
Sherry Riter says
Since I always do the treatment at night, I usually go to bed after just rinsing my hair. But if you are going out or want to style your hair, yes, you need to wash your hair after you’re finished. 🙂
pam s says
how long do you leave the oil on your head, and what kind of shampoo do you use? Thx
Sherry Riter says
I leave the conditioner in my hair for three hours and use my regular shampoo to wash it out.
