There is a box (maybe now just a panel) that is able to broadcast action of one kind or another on it twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. I remember this box that we call television evolving from a small black and white with tubes to our present day (say it slowly with a loud booming voice and a slight echo) HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION.
My father loves the television. Unfortunately, one of the memories I have as a little, little girl is my dad always telling me to “Get out from in front of the TV.” He didn’t want to play very often and frankly, I grew to resent the television even before I understood the emotion I felt.
Then as a teenager, the television was in the family room where it echoed down the hallway right into my bedroom. That really wasn’t so bad except that my mother loves Westerns (actually she loves the Indian Chiefs) and I can’t stand Westerns any more than I like war movies. Cowboys and Indians hollering all the time drove me nuts.
Both of my parents will watch the same show over and over and over and over and over…Yuck! I think they both know every word to every episode of Walker Texas Ranger! I still can’t believe that they have been divorced for about 38 years and they both like that show the best. I find that rather Twilight-Zonish (Yes, I made up that word).
Television is the central activity in many homes while others abolish it as an evil device. Isn’t it strange that electronic equipment can cause such disparity in reactions?
I could live without the television and do most of the time. I find the constant noise and drone of a television to be aggravating akin to fingernails on a blackboard. I prefer silence or soft music while performing many activities at home such as crafts, writing, sewing, cooking and reading. I do love watching a good movie, but I don’t want a television show to control me from week to week and that is how it makes me feel with all the “To Be Continued” or “Season Finales”. So, my husband watches his big television in the dark Man Cave and I keep Turtle company in the silent and brightly lit family room. I know I’m pretty much the minority on this topic, but I’m used to being different (further evidence can be found if you look at my profile picture – oh yeah, a second grader with an orange hair bouffant!).
What part does television play in your family?
Oh, by the way, I didn’t even mention all the commercials that make the volume go up about 20 notches while advertising Viagra, Tampons and Erectile Dysfunction medication every ten minutes. Lovely, just lovely.

Couldn't agree with you more. If it were not for the kids, I would have gone twelve years without a television set in my home. Even then, they still only watch maybe six hours a week or less.
I say, turn off the TV – see how much gets done.

Well, I could live without the TV, especially since I have internet for news and weather, but hey that's just me.
I do watch with my husband after the kids go to bed, and I do enjoy the Discovery Channel, but I don't think I would really miss it.

You are so right about the commercials, I forgot! We don't have a television here, but occasionally I will run into one and see some crazy stuff playing. Then I think, that is a good reason not to have one. I remember the last time I was back in the USA and saw what was on during prime time, I was shocked!

I could do without the tv, but I suspect that is because I now browse the internet when bored instead.
My kids can take or leave it. My partner, on the other hand … I'm not so sure. He generally watches tv at night when the kids are in bed and flicks from one station to another, watching 5 mins here and 5 mins there.

So at least I can dream about my Cheifs and as for the Texas Ranger, good always wins and that is what I like. How I wish I could get my leg up like Chuck Norris at some of my adversaries Lol. We have the tv on most of the time. My wife always has it on, Jewelry TV. ugh, I hate their constant prattle.
I go for cable movies as I hate commercials. Even shows that I like, I watch on "On Demand" so there are fewer commercials and I can ff through them. NCIS, CSI [all of them], Numbers.
There are some that aren't on 'on demand' so we do have to watch some commercials.

I dislike the commercials too, always have. It's like why do you have to put a tampon commercial during my soap, duh there are little kids home with me. (that was years ago) I watch allot of movies but let me tell you that the last few weeks I haven't had it on in the background while I blog and it's been nice. I've been listening to music. We love TV, I have my favorites but I don't let it control me like I use to. I try not to take on new shows each year so I can get my list down to just a few favorites. It was a huge part of my childhood.

I have to admit we are TV people. We do hate commercials so have gone to a DVR. We record everything we want to watch then go back and watch when we want and fast forward past the commercials. Programs don't take as long to watch this way either.

You all, if my mom "gets her leg up like Chuck Norris" I will definitely post a picture. LOL
I do actually stare at the computer 2/3 of my day, but it doesn't have any commercials (wink)
