I remember when I was a little girl, back in the dinosaur era, it was not a requirement or the law for everyone to wear a seat belt or for children to remain buckled in a car seat while driving.
So before I became old enough to play Kill The Cows, I sat in the front seat between Mom and Dad on the way to my grandparents’ house without a seat belt. I couldn’t sit in the back seat because I had such horrible car sickness, but two hours was a long time to just sit even if it was in the front seat. I was too short to see over the dash and I couldn’t look out the side windows because that made me puke. Often I would just lay my head on Mom’s lap and my stinky little feet on Dad’s lap while he drove.
We didn’t have air conditioning in the car, so the windows would be down providing the lull of that “wind” sound. So with the hum of the car, the swishing of the wind, the warmth without air conditioning and Mom softly playing with my massive red curls, I would fall sound asleep for most of the journey.
Those trips provided me with some of the sweetest memories of my family. It wasn’t just the thrill of the trip, it was really the peaceful, happiness I remember feeling because I knew that both my parents loved me. Now that I have “grown up” I still know that they both love me. I don’t expect either of them to be perfect because that isn’t a requirement to giving love or receiving it and in their own way with all that they have and are, they both love me. I’m very thankful for my parents.
Now times have changed…We have air conditioning in cars and many other very modern conveniences, but the most important feature in automobiles today are seat belts. They provide added safety for every member of our family and all friends that ride in our vehicles. That is why everyone should wear seat belts. If you don’t wear them for yourself, wear them for your family.

Isn't that crazy how we never had to wear seats or sit in carseats! When I first got my SUV, my gma asked why I needed a car that big. I had to explain to her that I needed room for 3 carseats!!

I have a nasty habit of not putting my seatbelt on until I'm in Drive. Which means I reverse from my driveway totally unsafe. I'm working on it.
Luckily, I have never had a problem with my son wearing his seat belt. Even when he was young, it was just something that had to happen if we were going on a trip. I'm appalled when I hear/see parents who give in to whining and crying about it not being comfortable.
Oh–and sharing seatbelts with friends because there's not enough room in the car–that one always boggles my mind. If you don't have room for everyone, you don't drive anywhere.
Great familiy trip memories! I remember a lot of family trips where we were miserable-three kids packed in the backseat of a car, too hot, too cold, too crowded, my dad had baseball on really loudly on the radio…it was not really a good experience to go anywhere as a family…

I remember standing up with one foot on each side of the 'hump' in the back seat floor board! I also remember my baby brother rolling off the front seat and into the floor once. (I think that may be what's wrong with him.) lol!!!
